How To Convert A Cramped Kitchen In A Cosy Kitchen

All homes have a kitchen and they play a massive role in all of our lives. This is the place where we eat and drink, prepare quick meals or lazy lunches and for many it is thought to be the heart of a home. If you have a kitchen that is cramped and small you might want to spend as little time in there as possible, but it doesn’t have to be that way.

With a few tips you can convert a cramped kitchen into a cosy one and be able to enjoy this space in your home.

Take a good look at layout

The way that your kitchen is laid out can have a lot to do with how cramped it is feeling. Most people will have the main areas of the kitchen – the sink, the oven and the fridge in a triangle layout. This is to ensure that you can manoeuvre between each area with the minimum of fuss. Take a look at your layout and see if this is the case.

If your kitchen is cramped because you have a breakfast bar in the wrong place or you have doors that open into it, make changes. Get rid of the breakfast bar or relocate it and invest in sliding doors to give you more space.

Bin the clutter

Some people have a tendency to collect clutter and some of which will in inevitably end up in the kitchen. If you have cupboards and drawers full of things you don’t need it’s time to take a good hard look at your hoarding and start to bin the junk. When you do this you might find that you have much more free space on work tops, in cupboards and anywhere else in the kitchen. By freeing up more space you can make a cramped kitchen look cosy in no time.

Storage is everything

Kitchen furniture designers realise that not everyone has a lot of space to play around with in their kitchen, which is why they put so much emphasis on storage. With the right storage options you can transform your kitchen at a low cost and without having to make any major changes inside the home. Look for cupboards that will go from floor to ceiling if you are really struggling for space. Remember that using the full height of a room can dramatically change what you can do in it.

Or you might want to go for cupboards that are ideal for tight corners or make the most out of parts of the room that are often overlooked – for instance using the storage at the top of cellar steps, if you have them.

Innovative use of cupboards in every nook and cranny can increase your storage

Compact appliances
Have everything that you need in your kitchen without making it cramped by choosing appliances that are compact. There are many different sizes of fridges, freezers, washing machines and dishwashers to choose from so you will be able to get one that fits in your kitchen. You might be amazed at the room that you free up just by changing the size of your appliances and you might even save on energy bills too!

Use lighting
With the clever use of the right lighting you will be able to make even the smallest and darkest kitchen look light and airy. You can go for powerful LED lights that you can add to most areas of the kitchen, add colour with different bulbs and save space by using them under cupboards and so on. If you have not considered the lighting in your kitchen it is time that you did, as it really can make all the difference.

This kitchen is tiny but looks light and airy thanks to clever colours

By changing a few things round you can easily convert a cramped cooking space into a cosy kitchen. You will then want to spend more time there and enjoy flaunting your culinary skills once again.

Spring Cleaning 101: Top 5 Place You Don’t Want to Miss

It’s that time of year! Get ready to pull out the rubber gloves, trash bags, and open up the windows for a good spring-cleaning. This is the perfect way to push the restart button on your home. Here are our top five things to put the clean on this spring.

Closets and Dressers

Yours, the kids, and the coat closet. It’s time to hit the clothing caves to declutter and pass on all those “too small” and unused clothes. Consider giving jackets, clothing, and gently used shoes to a local donation centers or the Salvation Army. Doing this will help you to know what your kids have grown out of, identify what’s been hanging in back of your closet for three years, and find that coat a mystery party guest left at your home six months ago.

Pantry and Fridge

It’s time to dig around in the pantry, fridge, and freezer to throw out all of those expired items. Remember salad dressing that you bought and never opened? The chip dip left over from your super bowl party? What about the leftovers from last week? Get rid of them all. This would also be the perfect opportunity to give the fridge and freezer a refreshing scrub down. Take the time, when you’ve decided what food you’re going to keep, to organize and store all your food in sealed containers. This will help keep bugs out, and your food lasting longer and staying fresher.

Underneath the Bed

This is a popular place for kids to stash away clothes, toys, and homework they would rather avoid than take put away properly. Keep in mind that this spot is great potential real estate for organized storage of unused winter clothes. You can find tons of “under the bed” storage containers at local home and super stores, especially around Back to School time.

With the exception of the floors, these can end up being one of the dirtiest places in your home. They also go overlooked most of the year. Grab a bucket of water, an old rag or sponge, and get on your hands and knees! This is a laborious project, but when you realize how much dirt and grime is hanging out down there you’ll be happy to get it done. You also might find parts that have been broken or chipped away and can take the appropriate measure to fix or repaint them.

Bathroom Cabinets

If you have girls in your home, it’s likely you have cabinets full of fruity body wash, hair ties, and make up. This can be an easy clean up project without having to throw anything away. Use recycled containers and jars to sort out make up brushes, ponytail holders, and hairpins. Cheap baskets or decorative boxes can be placed under the cabinet to organize body wash, hair care products, and styling tools.

What are your spring cleaning tips and tricks?

Home Improvement 101: Polished Concrete Floors in Your Home

If you think that polished concrete floors are used in commercial facilities only, consider yourself wrong! Believe or not, they could be the perfect solution if you’re wondering how to upgrade your residential property. Your floor will look as it’s made of expensive flooring materials but you actually won’t invest much money at all. The polished concrete gives a beautiful finish and also has few key benefits that you can’t ignore.

What you have to know first is that the installation of the polished concrete floor is cheaper than the other surfaces. You don’t need the expensive traditional floor covering materials and all the labor that goes along with them. To polish the floors, the professionals use methods of flattening and leveling the concrete. This reduces your costs for maintenance over time. The smooth surface of the polished concrete is also non-abrasive which is another advantage.

The everyday use of the floor wears out its surface over time. It’s already proven that the polished floors are more durable than most surfaces like wood. They’re not as vulnerable to damage. Don’t worry if you drop something heavy on it! It won’t break or alter the smooth image. The polished concrete floors are fire resistant and protected from the bad influence of the UV lights. The polished concrete will be your long term flooring solution.

Easy Cleaning

Concrete floors are easier to clean and they continually maintain their modern and elegant look. You’ll never need to polish it again or use a wax. The polished floors eliminate dust mites, mold and pet dander that gather and live in carpet fibers. Your family will be protected from all kinds of germs and allergens from this solution.

It’s NOT slippery!

Maybe you think that when a surface is described as “polished”, this makes it slippery. Well, this is not the case. Step with confidence because it’s safe! Treat the floor with anti-slip conditioners that make better traction in the cases of wet concrete. When you choose who to make your floor, check if this company meets the requirements of the OSHA standards for floors.

These floors will improve the style and looks of your home. Polished concrete floors will impart a high-gloss shine on your floor, making your home have a luxurious feel. Although it’s not a marble, it looks very similar to it! There are many color and style themes available.

Now that you know the basics and benefits of polished concrete floors, you can choose your level of sheen depending on your aesthetic requirements and maintenance abilities. You can also choose between dry or wet polishing. Options are best discussed with the experts.
